Wednesday's Assignment

Good Morning:

Remember, you are to look a the picture carefully and then click on the comments link at the bottom and place your answer. You will reply anonymously! Don't forget to include your name someplace in your response so that I will know who to give credit to.

Question: Look very carefully at the picture, you are driving the car in the left lane. You are going to pass the reddish color SUV in the right hand lane. If you are a defensive driver, or one that always uses extreme caution in your driving you might think that this is not a safe maneuver. Why? Describe the driving environment in this photo and tell me why this is an unsafe practice.

I hope that you are all having a nice spring break. Don't forget we have class and Monday morning and you need to come in prepared.

hey..sorry this a really late..i wasnt around a computer for awhile..yesterday too.:)

In the picture, i think it would be an unsafe to try to pass the reddish SUV because it looks like from the right there is another road about to enter the interstate..it would be better if the "passer" waited until they were completly past the other road entering and the vehicles that entered were all in the right lanes, driving along, and such. Then try to pass.

i think it would be unsafe to pass because to the right of the freeway it looks like another road or a onramp merging ontot the highway. so for instance if there where a car coming on to the highway and you tried to pass the SUV may be forced to merge to the left and it could cause a collision between you and th SUV and possibly the other vehicle.

Passing the red suv is not a safe decision to make because there is an on ramp to the right so if that suv were to move over that it should be you could and wouldn't beable to pass the suv safe. It would just been more safe to wait to pass after the on ramp. Also the suv may not be aware that there are cars coming on from the on ramp and have to suddenly go to the left lane without mine expectence.

sorry this is late again...

well i think that it wouldnt be a good decision to pass beacause if a car were to be coming off the ramp the red car would have to move over into the passin lane. so if you were there...they might hit you, or the other cars could collide.

sorry this is late.. i wasnt around a computer for a few days... and i halfway forgot about it today!!

It looks like it would be unsafe to pass the red SUV becuase there is an on~ramp coming onto the intersate. SO if there was a car comin on to the interstate the red SUV might move into the left lane to let them on easier or be forced. That would then cause a problam if you were passing them at the time, and they didnt see you.

The reason why the scene in the picture is not a safe maneuver is because of the onramp to the right of the road and what your trying to do. THe driving environment seems to be right beside Missoula (a busy town for sure) in the stretch of highway that you can only travel 65mph and also has the idocks=cement thingy dividing the highway. It would not be safe to past the red SUV until you have passed the onramp without any trouble because there's no need for a possible collision. Safety counts!

i checked in wednesday and nothin was there, and i forgot to check back in until today. my bad.

not only is there an on ramp but there is also the truck and other traffic ahead of the suv that could cause a major problem if you were trying to pass. you could just stay to the left and pass them both but the other cars ahead might be in the way. the situation could be worse if there was a vehicle or 2 entering the interstate.
did u take this pic?

sry, that last one was westen

In the enviornment it look likes there is a side road that is going to merge into the interstate. It would be a safe choice to wait until there is nothing around you but the interstate and other cars. Also, if there is not alot of room between the SUV and the semi, you should wait until it is possible to safely pass both

You are on the highway and there is an on ramp to the right. You are about to pass some one. You should probably stay back a ways because if someone were to be coming up the on ramp you wouldn't be able to pull out of the way to let them on.

I think the driver should delay passing until rhey get past the acess road so they can avoid causing a collision. The SUV may not Know you are there and may not know that there is a car on the ON ramp So you Should Assume they dont and wait to pass.

Anonymous said...

it would be unsafe because if you try to pass them with another intersection coming up you could hit another car if you are not paying attention to what you are doing.

I think that it would be unsafe because there is an onramp on the right side of the highway and if there is a car coming onto the on ramp the SUV would probably change lanes and get into the same lane as you and possibly cut you off.

wait untill the road is clear and then pass the vehicle.

you would proceed with caution and make shure you dont stay in that persons blind spot very long.

in this picture, this would be unsafe because there is another road on the left side of the road. so you should wait until that road is clear and accelerate slowly until your past the car and then ease your way back into the right lane and repeat as many times as needed!

This would be unsafe to pass in this situayion because there is an onramp merging with the highway and if you were to pass the red SUV would not be able to get into the left lane.

I think it would be better to wait until you pass the on ramp to pass the red suv. Because another vehicle could be coming up the on ramp and you could not see them. And the red suv would have to move over so they can enter the highway. Then after you pass the red suv then you could try to pass them.

that car should go on the left lane cause there might be a car thats on the other side of the road.

There is a merging lane on the right side, so you should wait until after the merging lane to pass in case someone is trying to get on the highway.

i think its a IPDE process also..
Because you have to watch out for other cars, signs and stuff.

srry this is part of my other answer

LATE NO COMPUTER ACCESS OVER BREAK!!!

I think it would be unsafe to pass the car because there is an on ramp comming on from the right and the red car might have to move to the left lane to let him on, and if you were there you would be blocking that action. Also it looks kinda of nasty outside, like the roads could be slightly icy, and windy. There is also snow on the sides of the road, so that tells you it's cold.

First of all, there is an on-ramp off to the other side of the red car. By the time you were to pass him, then he would be blocking anyone that was on the ramp. He wouldn’t be able to move over a lane to let anyone on the highway if they were on the ramp. There is also a semi up farther on the road. If you were to pass the red car, then you would also have to pass the semi to. If the semi was driving slower, then the red car would catch up to him quickly, and he would have to pass him. Unfortunately for him, you would be blocking his passing zone, and then he would not be able to pass the semi. The main reason that it is unsafe to pass the red car though, is the problem with the on-ramp.

i think that its not safe to pass that vehicle now because when you finally get into position to pass the vehicle then there could be a car right there on the onramp. you might have to move over abrutly and cause a collision. it would be better for the driver to get clear of the on ramp

it might not be a good idea because there is a truck not to far down the road and you will just have to pace it and it might not be safe.
